Scot has focused on criminology and criminal justice through his education and much of his teaching career. He received his Bachelor's degree from Eckerd College (a little school at the tip of St. Petersburg, FL, right on Tampa Bay, which made for a fantastic distraction from studying). It was there where he met his future wife, Melody. They completed their schooling at the University of Florida. Scot has taught in North Carolina and Florida, in Criminology and Sociology departments.

What are some of the signature assignments you have given your students?
I have been using "webliographies" for the last few years in many of my courses, to allow students to utilize the growing mass of online knowledge in their educational pursuits.

The accomplishment I am most proud of is...
Effectively juggling job and family for the past fifteen years. I currently have two children with high GPAs and award cases full of gymnastics medals. As of June 2008, I will have been married for 19 years (all to the same person, even!), which is depressingly rare these days.

What I like most about the students at USF Polytechnic...
Good learners. The vast majority come to class prepared and interested in the subject.

Scot teaches using a number of tools. He is comfortable with the online delivery of courses as well as in person. His courses utilize lectures, discussions, written and oral assignments, and audiovisual elements. He believes in the use of current events in each class to consistently connect the course material to "real life".

Scot's area of research interest is sexual violence on college campuses, with a secondary interest in studying deviance in online spaces. His doctoral work focused on developing a theoretical model of college sexual assault. Subsequent research examined the topic of pornography on the Internet. His current research interests include the effects of attitudes and personal definitions on self-defined crime victim status, and the motivations and excuses of online pedophiles.
