Program Requirements

Psychology, BA

120 total semester credit hours required

Program requirements prior to admission into USF Polytechnic
(approximately 60 semester credit hours)
Students should complete their associate's degree or 60 transferable credit hours at the local community college or another college or university prior to admission into USF Polytechnic. Limited access programs have additional prerequisite and GPA requirements for admission into the college or program of their choice. Some lower level prerequisite courses are now available at USF Polytechnic.

General Education Requirement
To earn a bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida, students must complete the state-required general education course work. These are lower level courses that are required for all undergraduate students. These general education courses are automatically satisfied with an Associate of Arts degree from a regionally accredited Florida public college or university.

English composition (6 credit hours)
Quantitative methods (6 credit hours)
Social sciences (6 credit hours)
Natural sciences (6 credit hours)
Historical perspectives (6 credit hours)
Fine arts (3 credit hours)
African, Latin American, Middle Eastern, or Asian perspectives (3 credit hours)

Prerequisite Courses Required
There are no state-mandated common prerequisites (or equivalents). However, students are encouraged to take the following courses, if available, during their program of study at the community college. A grade of C is the minimum acceptable grade.

  • PSY 2012 Introduction to Psychological Science I
  • An additional lower level psychology course within the psychology inventory (any PSY, CBH, CLP, DEP, EXP, INP, PE,PSB or SOP AT THE 1-2XXX LEVEL)
  • BSC XXXX Any level general biology course
  • Statistics (PSY3204 Psychological Statistics is preferred)

Psychology Program Requirements at USF Polytechnic
(approximately 60 semester credit hours)

Introductory Psychology Requirements (3 credit hours)
One of the following:

PSY 2012 Introduction to Psychological Science I (3 credit hours) *
PSY 3022 Contemporary Problems In Psychologu (3 credit hours) *
INP 3101 Applied Psychology (3 credit hours) *
SOP 3742 Psychology of Women (3 credit hours)*

*Take one of these only if you have NOT taken an introductory course in psychology at another college or university.

Methods Requirement (10 credit hours)

PSY 3204 Psychological Statistics (3 credit hours)**
PSY 3213 Research Methods in Psychology (4 credit hours) (prerequisite: PSY 3044)

AND one of the following AFTER taking PSY 3213:

CLP 4433 Tests and Measures (3 credit hours)
PSY 4205 Experimental Design and Analysis (3 credit hours)

**If students have STA xxx Statistics course, they do not take PSY 3204, but they will have an extra PSY 4xxx to complete their required psychology hours. Likewise, students who take PSY 3204 will not have to take an additional STA xxx course

Experimental Psychology Requirements (6 credit hours)
At least two of the following AFTER taking PSY 3213:

EXP 4204 C Perception (3 credit hours)
EXP 4304 Motivation (3 credit hours)
EXP 4404 Psychology of Learning (3 credit hours)
EXP 4680 C Cognitive Psychology (3 credit hours)
PSB 4004 C Physiological Psychology (3 credit hours)

Social/Applied Psychology Requirements (6 credit hours)
At least two of the following AFTER taking PSY 3213:

CLP 4143 Abnormal Psychology (3 credit hours)
DEP 4053 Developmental Psychology (3 credit hours)
INP 4004 Industrial Psychology (3 credit hours)
PPE 4003 Personality (3 credit hours)
SOP 4004 Social Psychology (3 credit hours)

Psychology Electives (9 credit hours)
Any three psychology courses at the 4000 level.

Exit Requirements (9 credit hours)
Literature & Writing (3 credit hours)
Major Works/Issues (6 credit hours)

Foreign Language (8-10 credit hours)
All students must complete the institution's foreign language requirement. For students receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, this is satisfied with successful completion of two semesters of the same foreign language in college. Foreign language courses are not available at USF Polytechnic.
