Program Requirements

Applied Science, BSAS - Information Technology

120 total semester credit hours required

Community College AS Degree (approximately 60 semester credit hours)

General Education 18 credit hours

Students are encouraged to complete at least 18 credit hours of the general education requirements as part of the AS degree, and it is highly recommended that students select Gordon Rule communication and computation courses to fulfill these requirements while at the community college.

The AS degree will transfer as a complete 60 credit hour package to USF (applicable only to the BSAS program). Technical course work will transfer as a 42 credit hour technical block. The remaining 18 credit hours of general education course work from the AS will be matched against USF requirements to determine which courses remain outstanding for fulfillment of the university's 36 credit hour general education requirements.

General Education Requirement
To earn a bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida, students must complete the state required general education course work. Courses that were not completed as part of the AS degree may completed either at the lower or upper level. Students should meet with their academic advisor for assistance in selecting courses.

English composition (6 credit hours)
Quantitative methods (6 credit hours)
Social sciences (6 credit hours)
Natural sciences (6 credit hours)
Historical perspectives (6 credit hours)
Fine arts (3 credit hours)
African, Latin American, Middle Eastern, or Asian perspectives (3 credit hours)

Course requirements for the information technology concentration
The BSAS-IT concentration consists of 19 to 21 credit hours. Students will formulate a program of study for the concentration, which will be evaluated and approved by the department on the basis of how well it fits their stated educational and career goals. The concentration will typically consist of two required courses and four additional courses selected from those offered by the department or other departments.

Required Courses:

  • CGS 3303 IT Concepts (3 credit hours)
  • EEL 4782 & EEL 4782L IT Networks and Lab (4 credit hours)

Select four additional courses:

Students select four courses that support their educational or career goals. These could aim toward a specialization in IT (such as application development, web design, networking, information security, etc.) or a particular industry segment (health care, education, manufacturing, logistics, etc.).

Please note that selection of some courses may require that the student must fulfill additional prerequisite requirements.

Foreign Language Requirement (8-10 credit hours)
All students must complete the institution's foreign language requirement. For students receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, this is satisfied with successful completion of either two years of the same foreign language in high school or two semesters of the same foreign language in college. Foreign language courses are not available at USF Polytechnic.
